To encourage a cleaner, updated test bank, you have the ability to export/ import specific testbank categories from one course to another.
Please note, when importing course quizzes over from one class to another, the original course’s testbank will come over as a whole. Therefore, if your aim is to start fresh with your testbank and new questions, you may have to recreate your quizzes. To ensure your gradebook setup stays intact, the best course of action is to import everything over and clean up the unneeded testbank categories using the Deleting a Testbank Category page.
Exporting Steps
- Navigate to the course you would like to export a test bank from.
- From the main course page, select the More tab and click “Question Bank”.
- In the first drop-down list on the page, select the “Export” option.
- On the Export page, select “Moodle XML format” for the File Format.
- In the General Section, select the category name from the drop-down that you wish to export out.
- Select the “Export questions to file” button. An .xml file will be downloaded to your browser.

- Next, you’ll see a page that mentions it’s parsing your questions from the file. You can review the questions to make sure they are all accounted for (it will not show you the answer choices on this page). Hit Continue once done.
- You should now see the category you previously exported with a total count of the questions included. Sometimes it’s listed on the last page of the test bank categories list.
