Grade Quizzes

Quizzes in Open LMS automatically grade themselves with the exception of essay questions. Essay questions must be graded by the instructor before students receive a final grade for the quiz.

To view quiz grades,go to the quiz, and click  “Attempts.”

How To Grade Essay Questions in Open LMS

If an essay is present in a quiz, “Not yet graded” is displayed until the instructor grades all essay questions the student submitted.

Note: it is important to grade essay questions promptly as students cannot see the quiz grade until their essay questions are graded.

To grade essay questions, click on the quiz that contains the question. Once inside the quiz,  click on the gear icon in the upper right corner and choose “Manual grading”. Manual grading brings up a separate area for grading essay questions.

In the essay grading screen, each essay question has its own row. Each row has three columns: To grade, Already graded, and Total. The grade all link in the Total column is the most efficient way to grade numerous essay submissions at once. Click the grade link in the To grade column or grade all link in the Total column to begin grading the essay questions.

The question is shown in blue, the student’s answer is shown in the white box. After reading the student’s answers, scroll down the green area to assign a grade.

 

There are 5 columns for each question, the to grade column provides the option to grade each response to the essay question.

At the top of the manual grading screen, there are options for sorting the results. The most appropriate number of questions per page will vary depending on the question size. 5 is the default value. Order attempts allow the instructor to order the attempts randomly, by date, or by student name.

Below is the Options area, is the Grading Attempts area. Each student attempt is display one by one. The student’s answer is located int he blue box.  Enter feedback to the students in the large blue text area, then enter a grade in the box labeled Mark. If the question is worth 10 points, the mark will say out of 10. You can assignment partial credit (such as 5) to give half credit for the answer.
