Gradebook – Joule Grader

The Joule Grader is the default gradebook view in Moodle. When an instructor clicks on the “Grades” link in the administration block, they are taken to the Joule Grader. The first view in the Joule Grader displays all items not inside a category (make sure to click the “Show uncategorized items” in the top right corner), and category totals.

It is important to avoid typing in grades for category totals. This creates a grade override which will prevent the total from updating when new grades are entered.

To enter grades for items in categories, cleck the “All Categories” dropdown menu in the upper left corner of the Joule Grader. A list of all categories created in the Simple View will appear. Select the category that contains the item that needs to be graded.

Once inside the category, assignment inside the category appear from left to right in the gradebook. Grades can be typed directly into the column cell for each item. To grade an individual assignment quickly, click the paper icon beside the assignment name at the top of the column and choose “Column Grader”.

The Column Grader provides easier access to grading assignment because it isolates a single assignment form the rest in a pop up window. It also provides a “Check to make empty cells = 0” feature that, when checked, will populate all empty cells with a 0 grade.

The Column Grader

The Column Grader pop up allows easy faster grading by isolating one assignment from the rest.

When grades are typed in manually in the Joule Grader (or Grader Report), the grade cell will change to a beige color. This color represents a grade override. The only place to change the grade after it is manually entered is in the grade cell itself. It will no longer accept grades coming directly from assignments automatically (such as quiz results and assignnments graded in the grading area of the assignment).

A cell with grades entered inside the gradebook (not sent to the gradebook from a quiz or assignment) appear beige in color.
